It isn’t always easy to find time to enjoy birds in the wild. Maybe you live in a city, perhaps you’re chained to your desk most of the daylight hours, and/or you have a family or partner who has different interests. Regardless of your situation, here are 5 ways that you can enjoy birds in the wild.
1. Get a Bird Feeder
Just do it! It’s a quick and easy way to attract wild birds to your yard. You will be able to enjoy birds at any time during the daylight hours and from the comfort of your home or office. See this post for different types of feeders.
No time for committing to a bird feeder? No problem. Grab a plate from your cupboard, put a dollop of peanut butter on it, add a side of raisins, blueberries, or cranberries, and they will come.
2. Find a “Lights Out” Organization
You might live in a city, or commute into a city, which means you probably walk a few blocks (or more) to work during the pre-dawn hours. By finding a Lights Out organization, you can help birds on your way to work.
3. Take a walking break
Take a break and get outside! A 30 minute walk during lunch time, or any part of your day, can yield a lot in terms of exercise and birding! Depending on where you are located you can turn 30 minutes into a bird walk.
Whether this break is at a park with your kid(s), outside on your lawn, or city park, take it and make note of what you see.
4. Take a Hike
If you live in a city, get out of it for a weekend, find some trails and go! If you live in the burbs, make use of the walking and bike trails that your community has to offer!

Register here: FeederWatch, document the birds that visit your feeder (beginning November 12, 2016 through April 7, 2017) and enter the data. This is a great way to learn about the different birds species that come through your area during the winter months.
